Linebackers
This year’s group of linebackers is not particularly strong. However, there are many solid prospects who should become quality NFL backers. Dwayne Rudd of Alabama has drawn comparisons to Derrick Thomas and is the top linebacker in the draft. He has great quickness and is a powerful hitter. Former Virginia teammates, Jamie Sharper and James Farrior, are multitalented outside linebackers. They can defend the run, cover backs out of the backfield, and blitz the quarterback. Look for both of them to be selected in the mid first round, with Farrior going before Sharper. Other outside linebackers to watch include; Keith Mitchell, Texas A&M, Jason Taylor, Akron, Greg Jones, Colorado.
Tyrus McCloud, Louisville, is the best inside linebacker in the draft. He has the size and strength needed to become a run stuffing inside linebacker in the NFL. Matt Russell out of Colorado is an experienced inside linebacker who has the character to become a leader on defense. His aggressive style and strong work ethic has impressed scouts. Some other inside linebackers to look for on draft day include; Jarrett Irons, Michigan, Tony McCombs, Eastern Kentucky, Ink, Aleaga, Washington, Henri Crockett, Florida State.
